i would just like to state that Empire of the Sun (www.myspace.com/empireofthesunsound) are going to be huge before 2010. (especially if they come over and play sxsw.)

empire of the sun = mgmt + cut copy, which kind of makes sense, since mgmt are really big right now so people are nicking their sound and empire of the sun are from australia, just like cut copy (and the presets), where it seems the only popular music coming from there is dancey in nature.

2. there is a movie coming out that takes place in my town. well, it takes place in a mall in my town that doesn't exist.

they mention west orange (yes, my town has a very strange name) about 35 seconds into it. it's weird to have your rinky dink small town as the background for a film. i like how they made up a big mall for our town. NOT EVERY TOWN IN JERSEY HAS A MALL, PEOPLE! it's every other town, duh. too bad it's going to be one of the worst films of the year. i could almost be tempted to see it just to see if it was actually filmed in my town, but i can't bear to give my money to such crap.

oh also: despite the ridiculously high temperature, it's autumn!!!! best time of year!!!!

oh also: i decided to relive part of my childhood today and went pumpkin picking.

this will be the first time i carve pumpkins. STAY TUNED!

the following are among my favorite finds from my grandpa's box (originally his mother's) of letters and other things. i went through hundreds of letters, a bunch of telegrams, and a few photos and other things.

obviously i don't expect everyone to be interested in this because it's my family, but i think these old relics are pretty cool, regardless of your relationship to me =)

my grandparents sent this to my grandpa's parents (dr. t.n. alpert is his dad) to announce their engagement. they still haven't explained the soap thing to me =)

at the temple my grandparents belong to, where they were honored.in the pic: my grandparents; their 5 kids; 1 wife- 1 husband- and 1 partner-by-marriage; and all the grandkids. yes, my grandma is giving me the devil horns.

this is my favorite love letter. this is from my grandpa's dad to his mom. they had been married for 2 years and my grandpa (leonard) had just been born. (btw--i'm pretty sure that "bebele" is a yiddish term of endearment, as is "hezele".) i'm not sure why he was traveling all over at this time, but he was. based on the letters i read, it seems like he wasn't home for a good while.

this one's pretty funny. the middle line that you can't read says "...augmented. I was indifferent as a child." it's good to know men were no different 90 years ago =)

this one is pretty awesome for reasons similar to the one above. you have to love the compassion about his wife's looks.

this one is pretty special, as it came from my grandpa's brother, delby, who made aliyah, (returning to israel) permanently and lived, worked, and raised his family on a kibbutz. mikey was his first and only son with his first wife, ahuva. i met mikey and all his/my family in israel, and they were all amazing people. i know mikey's half brothers because they both lived in nyc (one still does) and i saw them every once in a while.
at this point, israel had only been a state for 3 years, so everything was so new and unknown. the fact that they moved there then is really, really amazing.

this one won't scan well, so it's really hard to read. it's an article published in a paper in 1960 detailing delby's move to israel. the most notable part, i think, of the article, states that adlai stevenson, eleanor roosevelt, and helen keller (among others) had visited the kibbutz and delby guided them.

a postcard from my great grandma to my great grandpa (my grandpa's parents). i like it because it's funny for me to imagine my gramps as a baby, crawling around on the floor, chasing after a box =)

i really like this telegram because i think the little rhyme is really cute and smart. this was sent to my great-grandparents congratulating them on their marriage

LOVE these. my grandpa went to cal tech at age 15. yes, he was and is a genius. his report cards got better, as the photo after this one shows.

this telegram announces the birth of my aunt liz, the oldest of my grandparents' five kids. wish they had one for my mom, but there wasn't one in the box i have.

and she was talking about the fashion on gossip girl and talked about the headbands and i would just like to say that i am a TREND-SETTER. i started wearing headbands and wayfarer sunglasses and jackets with big buttons when i first moved to london in sept 2006 and then everyone copied me.

i'm moving back to london in two weeks (OH MY GOD). be prepared for more fashion-forward tips. hahahahahhahhahahhahaehhehehehehehehehehehhe

yesterday was the best day of my life. first of all, at the eye doctor i found out that my eyesight didn't change. this is the first time in 14 years (aka since i started wearing glasses) that my eyes haven't changed. THIS IS AMAZING. i'm already blind and was afraid my eyes might never stop getting worse. if my eyes haven't changed when i get back from london, i'm considering lasik! WOO HOOOOOOOOO! this probably sounds lame to most people, but you have to imagine what it's like for me--i literally cannot see what i'm doing in the shower. can you imagine that? sometimes i drop the the little encasing on my razor (the little clear thing) and i have to feel around for it! and contacts irritate my eyes so much that i rarely wear them and when i do it can't be for more than a few hours.

ANYWAY also i finally, after FOUR YEARS OF PATIENTLY WAITING, got to see THE RIFLES IN NEW YORK WITH MY SISTER. i saw them twice in london and they were fuckin amazing but without my sister it's just not the same. of course they were brilliant. of course what made the show even better was that LIAM (gallagher) was stood TEN FEET FROM ME enthusiastically cheering them on. LIAM AND I HAVE AMAZING TASTE OBVIOUSLY. andy and gem were there too (no noel, poor guy). paul weller was the headliner and he was pretty good too - i mean, he IS paul weller. i really wanted to stay through the end to stalk oasis but i've acquired a mean cold and basically felt like death so had to leave about 10 songs in, sad :(
PLEASE GUYS PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE GO SEE THE RIFLES AT MERCURY LOUNGE NEXT FRIDAY PLEASEEEEEE IT WILL BE THE BEST GIG EVER IN YOUR LIFE. noah and the whale are opening--they sing that "sun sun suuuuun" song in that car commercial.

oh also saw the stereophonics who KILLED ITTTT. kelly jones' voice is unreal. i really hope i can see them in london at the O2 arena. and tonight is the kooks/wombats and next week is swell season (which i'm working-it's in central park so come say hi and sit on the grass and listen to the show!) and THE RIFLES and cut copy/presets OH dear lord what did i do to deserve this month of goodness?!!

now if only my body/immune system would work as wonderfully as the rest of my life. this has been my life the past month and a half:
3 weeks of acute-bordering-on-severe stomach pains --> doctor figures it out; i have an inflamed intestine (NICE!), solves problem with pills --> blood tests taken to determine what was wrong with me show that i have anemia; am forced to go on iron pills, which, guess what, UPSET MY STOMACH HAHAHAHHHA CRAZY --> take the iron pills for two weeks, which make me dry heave if i don't eat something when taking them, even though they're only effective if taken on an empty stomach and you don't eat anything an hour after taking them, OH JOY ISN'T THIS FUN!? --> am forced to stop taking the iron pills because i get ALL FOUR of my wisdom teeth taken out and i can't eat ANYTHING because my mouth is super sore because i had a really tough surgery (that's what the doc said--i was flying high on drugz) --> periods of intense pain due to mouth retardation --> mouth is almost fully healed and i wake up with a COLD --> can't breathe through my nose so am forced to breathe through my mouth which DRIES OUT the four holes i have in my mouth --> edit: come home from kooks show and throw up due to bad gag reflexes and my body finally telling me, "STOP taking 15 pills a day and only eating soup!!!" --> awesome.
the cold arrived yesterday, so that's what i'm currently dealing with. my stitches came out of my mouth today so i'm almost fully healed, but i'm stuck eating soup and pudding all day. two weeks straight of that is going to drive me insane!
WHY DOES MY BODY HATE ME SO MUCH!?!?!

south america time. s. america is another world. it's an amazing place and every country is so different from the next and soo different from the US. we went to four countries - peru, bolivia, argentina, and brasil (yes, i'm spelling it that way.) i even ran out of stamp space in my passport!! it's currently with the US government getting new pages put in!!

i'm being wayyyyyyy lazy and not posting any photos from a ton of places we visited because if i did it would take forever. but if anyone is ever considering going to any of these places and wants some info, i will gladly tell you about all the places i visited and upload some pics for you then! there is sooo much to see in each country--i could've spent the two weeks in peru alone and still i wouldn't have seen all the things i wanted to see.

first we started in lake titicaca, peru.
we went to an island called Uros that is man-made entirely of reeds. it is awesome.

one of the little bbs that lived on the island became our little friend and sang songs for us as we took a ride on one of their reed boats. again, it is awesome.

our second day in lake titicaca brought us across the border to bolivia to go to Sun Island. i forget what these mountains are called, but they're awesome and can be seen really well from sun island and even better from moon island (where we didn't go cos my mom is an evil, evil person haha)

the stairs on sun island. not too bad, but considering the altitude is ridiculously higher than ours, these were a challenge.

moving on to our next stop: iguazu falls in argentina (and brasil)
this is Owly, who stays near the pool of our hotel all day long. I LOVE HIM.

so iguazu falls/the rain forest that it's in is also out of this world. we saw so many animals and insects and birds it was crazy!! these are only SOME of the things we saw:

these are called coatis (ko-ah-tees). they're the size of raccoons and have similar tails but their noses/face look more like an anteater's. the ones in the park have gotten used to humans so they just come near you like you're nothing...more on that later.

my mom and i were chasing butterflies like it was our job. this one, which is really ugly on the outside, refused to ever open its wings and stay that way. but our guide knew a little trick: give it some water and it will sit and open its wings while it drinks!!! SCOREEEEEEEEEE

on our second day, we hiked wayna picchu (the big ass mountain that's in all the pictures of machu picchu...see above.) it was retarded. at times we were vertically climbing the mountain, with just a wire rope to hold onto. the "stairs" were rocks carved out to vaguely resemble stairs....it was so hard and scary, and sooooooooo not worth it.
this was the view you got:

half way up the mountain you could see that view and it didn't change much as you got higher....if anyone ever goes to machu picchu, i would tell them to hike half of wayna picchu (if they REALLLY wanted to), take the pictures, and then turn the hell around.

OMG OMG OMG. this was the second day in a row that this man was dressed this way. IF ONLY you could see him from the front...YIKES. my mom had no idea i was taking this picture, so that face she's making is NOT staged HAHAHAHAHAHAA. when i showed her the pic she said, "i didn't know i was making that face! i guess i wasn't hiding it very well"

we stopped at this place called Moray, which is an inca ruin. the incas WERE GENIUSES. Moray is "several enormous terraced circular depressions that were used to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops. The depth of the pits (the largest is about 30 m deep) creates a temperature gradient of as much as 15° C between the top and the bottom. As with many other Inca sites, it also has a very sophisticated irrigation system for providing the plants with water."

cusco, peru. we happened to be there on june 1, which is the big kick off day for their monthlong celebrations in the month of june. there was this crazy, huge, long festival that we got to witness:

finally, we stayed with our friend patty who's living in lima for a few days. we went to a monastery that had thousands and thousands of bones! it was super creepy but pretty awesome

two things i love

I LOVE SXSW!!!!!!!!!!! i was so worried that this year was gonna be lame, especially in comparison to last year (come on, the fratellis 5 times!!! nothing can beat that) but i keep getting more and more updates of bands i love that are playing! some aren't official, but when a band is playing nyc just before or after sxsw it's safe to assume they're playing sxsw. just today i got an update that the vines and ed harcourt are playing nyc just after sxsw, which most likely means they're playing sxsw!! and both are groups i LOVEDDDDDD and would love to see again but wouldn't necessarily want to pay to see again. SXSW = problem solved. and i'm fairly certain that this will be my last year attending the festival, so i'm happy because i think i'll go out with a bang!

I LOVE MY INTERNSHIP!!!!!!!!!!! i'm actually learning real media/PR stuff/programs and the people there are nice and it's a very fun environment. and yesterday i emailed david fricke on his PERSONAL account to pitch coverage of one of our artists to him. AWESOME! (i also emailed my old boss at the big takeover, which was comical.) (btw, if you don't know who david fricke is, you need to shape up.)

semi related: in my PR class we had to write a bio and it was worth 50 points and i got 49/50 and that in itself made me feel good because i know i'm going to be doing writing if i do go into the PR field and i'm pretty confident that i can write some good stuff (bullshit or not.) but i also felt better when some of the kids in the class were asking how she graded or what she based her grading on because they didn't do as well as they might have imagined and she responded by saying something along the lines of "i might've written a lot on your assignment but i want to take the time to point out what you need to fix so you can improve" which essentially means that she thought my writing was pretty good as is because there was nothing written on mine aside from a few "good!"s and a "great" at the end. the only thing she did fix on mine was take out the exclamation points i used. i'm so used to using them in PR (it seems like EVERY sentence ends with an exclamation point) that i have a hard time leaving them out when necessary. this gives me confidence that i don't have and that is greatly needed. huzzah!!!

this is a very positive post and it might nauseate some of you but i'd rather write/read happy things instead of sad/complaining/whiny things!

okay i'm way too lazy/busy/not in the mood to do a big picture post of my "eurotrip" so there are only a few behind the cut, but they basically describe my time spent in each place. (i added more for belgium)

the trip was a lot lot lot of fun. i told myself to be aware of how much or how little fun i had back in london to see if i really wanted to go back after graduating in may and, well, i'm sure you guessed it: i REALLY REALLY REALLY want to go back. luckily for me, it looks like i'll be able to!! yipppeee!!!

belgium is awesome. it's really tiny but there's a lot to see. everyone is nice and speaks english and the best thing about them is they LOVE TO EAT. chocolate, french fries, waffles, and ice cream are their favorites, and OH MY GOSH guess what? they're my favorites too hahaa. i would recommend belgium to anyone, but DO NOT go in the winter--the weather is terrible. it's very cold, very windy, and very rainy!!! not to mention the fact that it gets dark early in winter there (as it does in most places), so there's even less daylight for touristy adventures. i would strongly recommend visiting in the spring/summer...i bet it's just stunning then!

scotland: dec 22-dec 26:

the boy on the right, rocky, lived with sarah in glasgow. the boy between us is castus, his brother, who was visiting. they're from lithuania and a lot of fun. we had christmas eve and christmas dinner with them, and spent a lot of our time in glasgow with them!

london: dec 26-30 and jan 6-8:

this is our friend gavin. he's the only person i met in london when i lived there who i still keep in touch with on a regular basis. we hung out a lot on this trip.

ummm, yeah, hahha. the girl in the foreground is cassie, my bestest fwend. she's american and we actually met at a futureheads gig years ago. she went to pace with sarah for their freshman year and then said "fuck this" and went to london to do her entire degree, so i spent all of my year abroad with her. i love this girl. this is us at gavin's house doing god know's what

also...i like jamie t. i decided to listen to him after wednesday to see what all the fuss is about. i've always liked 'sheila' and 'salvador' but i listened to the whole album and was impressed. he's got a really soothing voice and i like the way he raps and has all these background sounds. i think that tribally-chant of 'ooh! ahh!' in 'salvador' is one of the coolest sample things i've ever heard in a song.

oh and i was just reading ONTD and i think it's hilarious that amy winehouse's husband is in pentonville. that's the prison that was like a 10 min walk from me. it was the reason i always took the bus home from the scala even though i could walk home. i didn't want to get jumped/murdered by an escaped convict.

it reminds me of the time andrea and i RAN to catch a bus home from camden (aka the goth ghetto) and this older man who was hot despite the fact that he was missing his four front upper teeth said we looked like we just escaped from the insane asylum that was right next to the bus stop. then he harassed us because we were american and he's not allowed to go to america because he went to cuba a million years ago. we were like, "dude, we feel you. we've left our country for a reason, feel us?"
